Questions

How do I log a shift?

Tap Log shift on the Home screen. Enter your cash tips, card tips, tip-in (from a tip pool or coworkers), tip-out (paid to coworkers) and hours worked, then tap Save. The date is today unless you change it. Open More to add the names of the people you tipped out, noncash tips, service charges paid as wages, or a note. Same as last shift fills in the form from your last shift. Every shift belongs to a job, so add your job first in Jobs.

What is the monthly tip report, and when is it due?

IRS Publication 531 says employees report their tips to their employer in writing each month, by the 10th of the next month. If the 10th is a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, the report is due the next day that isn't. If your tips from one employer are under $20 for the month, no report is required for that month.

To see a month, open Jobs, tap your job, then This month's tip record. It shows the daily tip record, the total to report to your employer and the due date. When you give the report to your employer, turn on Mark as given to employer. Self-employed work has no monthly report to an employer.

How do I create the employer statement? (Pro)

  1. Add your name and mailing address in Settings → Your name and address. They print on the statement.
  2. Open the job's month: Jobs → your job → This month's tip record, or Exports → Monthly employer statement.
  3. Tap Create employer statement, choose English or Spanish (your employer may need the English copy), then share or print the PDF.
  4. Write your Social Security number on the blank line by hand, sign and date the statement, give it to your employer and keep a copy.

The PDF is a statement containing the information required by IRS Publication 531. TipStub never sends it to anyone for you.

How do I get my year-end records or a spreadsheet?

Open Exports. Year-end record pack (PDF) (Pro) covers one tax year and is made to hand to a tax preparer or VITA volunteer. Shift spreadsheet (CSV) (Free) covers the dates you pick. Both open your phone's share sheet, so you choose where the file goes.

How do I back up and move to a new phone? (Pro)

TipStub has no account, so your records move to a new phone only through an encrypted backup file.

  1. On the old phone, open Settings → Backup and restore → Create a backup. Choose a passphrase of at least 8 characters and write it down somewhere safe. Save the file (its name ends in .tiplogbackup) to Google Drive, Files, iCloud Drive or your email.
  2. On the new phone, install TipStub and go through the welcome screens (you can skip adding a job). Then restore Pro: Settings → Subscription → Restore purchases, using the same Apple ID or Google account you bought Pro with.
  3. Open Settings → Backup and restore → Choose backup file, pick the file, enter the passphrase and tap Restore. This replaces everything on the new phone with the backup.

Android to iPhone, or iPhone to Android: the backup file works on both. But a Pro subscription stays with the store you bought it in: a Google Play subscription can't be restored on an iPhone, and an App Store subscription can't be restored on Android. To restore the backup on the new phone, you need Pro from that phone's store. You can then cancel the old subscription in the old store.

Without Pro: export a CSV now and then to keep a copy of your records. TipStub can't import a CSV, so the CSV is a copy for you, not a way to move your records into the app.

iPhone to iPhone: if you set up the new iPhone from an iCloud backup or with Quick Start, iOS may bring TipStub's data along. Keep a backup file too.

How do I restore my purchase?

Tap Settings → Subscription → Restore purchases (it is also on the Pro screen). Use the same Apple ID or Google account you bought Pro with.

How do I manage or cancel my subscription?

Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends to stop the next charge. Deleting the app or your data doesn't cancel a subscription. Refunds of a purchase follow the store's rules: ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, or see Google Play's refund policy.

How do I turn app lock on or off?

Open Settings → App lock and turn on Lock TipStub. Choose a 4- to 6-digit PIN and enter it again. TipStub then asks for the PIN when it opens and after you've been away from it for a minute. If your phone has fingerprint or face unlock set up, you can also turn on Unlock with fingerprint or face (on iPhone: Unlock with Face ID or Unlock with Touch ID). To turn the lock off, change the PIN, or switch fingerprint, face, Face ID or Touch ID unlock, TipStub asks for your current PIN.

I forgot my app-lock PIN. What can I do?

TipStub can't recover or reset a forgotten PIN, and neither can we: the app keeps only a one-way hash of it.

How do I change the language?

Open Settings → Language and choose Phone language, English or Español. The employer statement and the export files have their own language choice, so you can give your employer an English copy.

How do I delete all my data?

Open Settings → Delete all data and confirm twice. This erases every job, shift and monthly report, your name and address, your settings and app lock from this phone, and cancels your reminders. It can't be undone, so export a copy first if you want one. It doesn't delete files you already shared or saved somewhere else. It keeps your Pro status on this phone and doesn't cancel your subscription.

Where is my data?

On your phone, and in your own iPhone backups if you use iCloud Backup or a computer backup. TipStub has no account, no server, no ads and no analytics. The Privacy Policy explains the details, including what RevenueCat processes for the Pro subscription.
